• 3RD GRADE CABBAGE GROWING PROGRAM

    A great way to get kids started in the garden is the National Bonnie Plants Third Grade Cabbage Program, it’s Free to any third grade classroom in the country. Each year, Bonnie trucks more than one million free O.S. Cross cabbage plants to 3rd Grade classrooms across the country. (O.S.  stands for oversized… these cabbages can grow upwards of 40 pounds making the initiative engaging and fun for kids)!

    Mannsdale Upper Elementary was fortunate to receive 150 plants this week and Coach Ro would like to distribute 2” plants with instructions, provided by Bonnie, to any 3rd grad students to carry home and grow. At the end of the growing season, students will  submit their cabbage and it will be entered in a state scholarship drawing. The state winners are randomly selected by each state’s Director of Agriculture, and Bonnie Plants awards a $1,000 scholarship for education to one student in each state.

     

    Parents: If you would like to have your 3rd grader to participate in this initiative, please follow the below steps to collect the National Bonnie Plants Third Grade Cabbage Program and Cabbage plant. 

     

    Student Guide & Plant Distribution: Student Guide & Plant Distribution will take place on Saturday, March 27th from 2pm-4pm and on Sunday from 10am - 12pm at Mannsdale Upper Elementary School Garden (behind the Upper School).

    What is the Bonnie Plants 3rd Grade Cabbage Program?
    In 1996 Bonnie Plants initiated the 3rd Grade Cabbage Program in and around headquarters in Union Springs, Alabama, with a mission to inspire a love of vegetable gardening in young people, teach kids where their food comes from, and grow our next generation of gardeners.
     
    By 2002 the program grew to become a national endeavor, including the 48 contiguous states. Each year, Bonnie sends more than one million free O.S. Cross, or “oversized” cabbage plants to 3rd Grade classrooms across the country*, whose teachers have signed up for the program here. If properly nurtured, kids can cultivate and grow cabbages that may tip the scale at more than 40 pounds!"
