ALL ABOARD...MOVING FULL STEAM AHEAD!Are you ready for another exciting school year? I am! I can't wait to meet you and your sweet child(ren)! This will be my seventh year serving as one of the counselors at Ann Smith Elementary. As in previous years, I will be working with all of the 2nd grade classes and part of the 1st grade; including K. Fairley, S. Jackson, S. McLellan, E. Melichar, R. Meeks, and L. Noble. Ms. Shana Green will serve Pre-K, Kindergarten, and the other 1st grade classes.
Starting mid-August, classes come to classroom guidance every other week for thirty-minute lessons that focus on Social-Emotional Learning, which includes lessons on Empathy, Emotional Management, and Problem-Solving. In the Spring, students will continue to learn skills that celebrate their uniqueness, how to have the courage to stand up for justice, and ow to over\come challenges with a growth mindset. My aspiration is to create an environment where teachers love to teach and students volunteer to learn. For over 20 years, I have researched, implemented, and shared Positive Behavior Intervention and Support (PBIS) strategies that have yielded a positive school climate and improved school performance levels. Because of dedication to everyone on the team, WE ARE PROUD to say that ANN SMITH IS A REACH MS TIER I AND TIER II MODEL SITE!My collegiate career began at Tougaloo College, where I earned a Bachelors Degree in Psychology. Delta State University, in my hometown of Cleveland, Mississippi, is where I earned both my Masters and
Specialist Degrees in Counseling.
Experience gained working with parents, educators, and community adopters has earned me numerous awards including Outstanding Educator by Parents for Public Schools, the Spirit of Safety Award given by the College of Life Long Learning at Jackson State University, Outstanding School Counseling Program of the Year from Mississippi Counseling Association, and the Governor's Golden Achievement Award for Outstanding Partnerships presented by Mississippi Partners in Education.
My school counseling vision is to create a safe place for students to learn and practice pro-social skills such as empathy, self-management, and problem solving in order to become productive citizens, today.
Please do not hesitate to share any concerns you have about your child's emotional health with me. I am available and committed to do whatever it takes to make this day and everyday a GREAT DAY TO BE A TITAN!
ONE HIGHLIGHT I WANT TO SHARE... I published a book in March of 2015... Prissy Lee's Fancy Feet! It's a very delightful story about a girl's pursuit for the right pair of shoes. Inspired by my daughter, a 2018 graduate of Ridgeland High School. This story is one most girls can definitely relate! It's available online at Barnes and Noble and Amazon. I have a few hardcover available, as well.
