A Little History About LBELuther Henry Branson Robert Cheeks Branson
Luther Branson Elementary School is located at 3903 Highway 16 E. in Canton, Mississippi. The school is named after Luther Henry Branson, a 2nd generation Branson and the son of Henry and Alice Williams Branson. His brother, Robert Cheeks Branson, donated 10 acres of land to build the school for the children of the Farmhaven community, a community that loved and admired Luther Henry Branson.
Both Robert and Luther attended Old Truelight school. Luther continued his education at Jackson College (now Jackson State University) in Jackson, Mississippi and received a teaching certificate. Luther returned to his former school, Old Truelight, to teach. Luther loved working with children and he shared that love with his wife, Emma Irby, who was a teacher also. They had one daughter, Alice Juanita Branson Banks, a retired teacher.
After living away from Mississippi, Robert wanted the children in his community to have a high quality school like he had seen elsewhere. He donated 10 acres of land near Highway 16 as a site for the school. His only request was that the school be named in honor of his brother, Luther Henry Branson.
Alice Branon Banks remembers her father as a caring man who wanted to pass the torch of education along to others. The faculty and staff of Luther Branson Elementary have continued Luther’s legacy by educating over 200 Pre-K-fifth grade students in the Madison County School District. We are proud to have such rooted heritage at our school.
