Mrs. Smith's 1st Grade Class
Welcome to our 1st grade family! I am so excited to have each and every one of you on this adventure with me into imagination and dreams! We are living "A Pirate's Life for MAE" and can't wait to set sail together!
About Mrs. Smith:
I graduated from Millsaps College in 1998 where I earned my BA in Elementary Education with an emphasis on literacy. I believe you can teach most any subject, life lesson, or skill from inside a story. Encouraging children to find their own niche and reading interests is my goal..for if a child can love to read..he/she will succeed!
I started my career many years ago in 1st grade, later moving up to 5th grade! It was there I learned the truest art of teaching is in relationships. I taught all subjects, later moving to ELA emphasis and even taught all boys' classes for two years! I love to find ways to help our young friends learn that reading can be fun and all it takes is finding that perfect book!
After marrying my husband, Doug, in 2006...I taught a few more years before leaving the classroom in 2008. I spent the next 8 years at home with my children, Grace and Harrison. During those years, I cultivated my skills by working with preschool children in early literacy. Such fun years!
I returned to the school setting as a Literacy Specialist in 2015, where I worked with struggling 3rd graders who needed that little extra time to hone in on their reading strategies. In 2016, my role as an active mom at MAE changed back to teacher! I loved teaching 2nd grade for two years, before getting back to where it all began..1st grade! This will be my 5th consecutive year working in 1st grade and my 17th year of teaching. Time flies when you are having fun!
Teaching is my passion, but being a wife and mother is my greatest joy! I've been married to Doug Smith for nearly 16 years. We have two beautiful children..Grace is a 10 year old "dancing queen" who will be in 5th grade at MAUE this year!! She is also a former member of Encore Dance Elite dancers and current dancer at Xpress Dance in Madison! Grace brings such joy as my "wild child"! Harrison is my 13 year old son who will be an 8th grader at MMS this fall! He loves all things science/animal related. Harrison can figure out just about anything with very little help from instruction manuals! Harrison is a member of the 8th grade football team at MMS this year along with being an active part of his youth group at Madison United Methodist.
We bleed blue and orange! Go Jags!
I've enjoyed watching many of your children grow as Kindergartners and look forward to exploring great things in 1st! We will use our hands, imaginations, and talents in all we do! In addition to skills..my greatest goal is to teach love and kindness.
Are you ready? Yo-Ho, Here we go!!
I am so excited to be working with Ms. Arrington this year! Please get to know her below! :)
