Welcome to Madison County School District Virtual Learning School and my teacher web page. Until we go back to full traditional school again I will be an 8th grade Virtual Resource Teacher via Microsoft Teams and Canvas. Continue to check here for updates. websites, and apps to help us all navigate through virtual learning. We will get through this toghether and all students will continue to grow academically, however do not forget to encourage them to exercise as well.

As a part of the special services department I will be happy to assist you as best I can as a virtual learning teacher. You may contact me via email at jthurmond@madison-schools.com and I will try to help you the best I can. If I can't address the problem via email then we will figure out another way. I am checking into other options that are at our disposal and will post those here as I find out about them. Let's work together to keep our children focused and to help them to succeed to the next level.

    About the Teacher

I am a certified teacher with 6 certifications: English 7-12, Social Studies 7-12, Business Education 7-12, Middle School Math, and Elementary Education K-6. In February of 2016 I attained my certification in Special Education by attaining the required score for that area on the Praxis II assessment. I received my degree in Elementary Education with a minor in General Business Administration from Mississippi University for Women. I graduated in December of 2005, and started full time teaching the fall of 2006 and have been teaching ever since. I started my college experience at the University of Southern Mississippi, and I also attended the University of Mississippi “Ole Miss”. I completed my Masters in Special Education in October of 2016 at Grand Canyon University, and I started my Doctorate August 31st 2017 at Grand Canyon University and I have transitioned to a Specialists Degree August of 2019.
I have taught: 5th and 6th grade Math, Science, and Social Studies, 8th grade Pre-Algebra, and 7th, 9th, and 11th grade English Language Arts. Before I received my degree in Elementary Education, I was in the retail industry for almost 20 years. I have worked for a discount store, a department store, a wholesale florist, and a vacuum repair shop.

I have lived in almost every area of Mississippi, and even though I have enjoyed living on the coast with its sand and water it was time to come back to Jackson to be closer to aging family members. I love a good road trip and really do not have a favorite spot. I do hope to travel overseas at some point, and some of the countries I would like to visit are China, Russia, Israel, and most every country in Europe. I have been known to attend several USM football games and always enjoy Hattiesburg. I also like going to concerts of some of my favorite entertainers when they are close by, and I love to go out to a good restaurant and eat a good meal with friends and family.

I am excited to a part of the team at Old Town Middle School, and I love helping students learn and master concepts so that they can go to the next level.
