Arts Education at Madison Avenue K-2
Madison Avenue Elementary K-2 was designated a Model Whole School by the Whole School Initiative and the Mississippi Art Commission in July of 2013. That means that we have served as a model and advisor to other schools that are just beginning their journey into arts integration. We obtained our goal to sustain our Arts program after the MAC Arts grant expired. We are in our 13th year now of a self sustained arts program. It is all thanks to the support of our wonderful parents, and their fundraising efforts, that the PTO has been able to keep this program going so strongly. The arts…drama, music, dance and visual arts…are used as a springboard to tap into each child's learning style. Teaching artists are brought in to share their talents with students, as well as their techniques with teachers.
Our Mission:
Is to inspire every child to be an “MAE Artist” by learning to explore, enrich
and engage their head, heart and hands in and through the arts.

Madison Avenue Elementary K2, has created an environment of learning by integrating the arts in all areas—Math, Language Arts, Reading, Science, and Social Studies. MAE is able to do this thanks to our supportive and generous PTO who makes it all possible.Funds to sustain our Arts program are provided through various PTO fundraisers including Holiday Heirlooms (late October), Spring Fundraiser (February) and Arts on the Avenue (April).Visual Arts
All students spend time each week experiencing the visual arts in
art class. Students have fun learning to creatively express themselves in a
variety of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, and
printmaking. Students are taught they cannot fail at art.Subject matter draws on each student's observation and
imagination. Using basic Elements of Art and Principles of Design, lessons are
integrated with science, math, language arts and social studies concepts to
create a lively, interactive learning environment. Art from various cultures
throughout time is also introduced in class.Throughout the school year, student artwork is displayed around the school and in businesses within our community.
We also have many arts related events/projects including our annual "Arts on the Avenue".
This usually is towards the end of the month of April, but be sure to check the Arts calendar
to make sure you don't miss the next exhibit or event.
In addition, classroom teachers at Madison Avenue K-2 are committed to reaching every student by infusing the arts into their standard curriculum, teaching all subjects with and through the arts.
Research shows that students taught through the arts learn to develop creative ways to approach problems, critical thinking skills, confidence and
self-esteem, and a deeper understanding of themselves, their own culture, and the cultures of others.
Our vision for the Art Program at Madison Avenue K-2 is as follows:· Every student is an artist.
· Every student knows basic art history (key figures).
· Every student gains confidence.
· Every student is exposed to varying media.
· Every student is offered an outlet for expression.
· Every student is familiar with the Elements of Art, and the Principles of Design.
· Every student can be successful in art class!
Because every child deserves to be taught in and through the arts
