What time does
school start each day? School begins at 7:30 a.m. with morning announcements.
When does school
begin for the 2015-16 school year? The first day of school for students is August 6, 2015.
What activity
classes does Highland offer? Our
students attend P.E., computer, music, and library once each week. Highland
students also participate in character education classes and community
service projects with our counselor each week. Students are also given the
opportunity to join our Drama Club, Science Club, and our Cheerleading Squad.
How can I keep
informed about my child's progress? Your child's teacher will put all important
information on his/her webpage. We encourage you to sign up for "Active
Parent" so you can have access to your child's grades at any time. See
your child's teacher or call the office for details on how to activate your
account. Progress reports are sent home midway through each grading period.
What is the
procedure for car rider drop-off and pick up? All students must be dropped
off and picked up in the front loop of the campus. Parents may drop off
beginning at 7:00 a.m. Teachers and staff will be on hand to assist students.
For safety reasons, parents should not park and walk across to pick up their
students. Students are dismissed each day at 2:15. Car riders are picked up
in the front circle. We are aware that events take place that result in the
need for transportation changes to occur. In the event that you must change
your child's afternoon transportation, please contact the office prior to
1:30 p.m.
What is the policy
on transportation? Parents are strongly encouraged
to use bus transportation as often as possible. The transportation company,
First Student, will coordinate bus routes, times, stops and drivers. Only
elementary students will be transported on elementary buses. Bus routes are
published in our local newspapers a week before school begins. Buses load and
unload in the side loop. Teachers and staff are located around the side loop
to assist students boarding buses. Contact First Student at 601-859-1633 with
any questions about transportation.
What do the terms
"Common Core" and "MAP" testing mean? Madison County has adopted
these national assessment programs to align our students with all students in
the nation. It allows us to target specific strengths and weaknesses in our
students. If teachers can identify an individual student's needs, then it is
beneficial in planning instruction. Your child's teacher can conference with
you about your child's results. We will be testing throughout the year to
access growth.
How can I become involved? Join the PTO. There are a wide
range of committees. You will also have opportunities to volunteer in your
child's classroom, attend field trips, work at the book fair, help with
performances, etc. Please don't hesitate to ask!
How much is lunch? Lunch is $2.75. We encourage you to pay by the
week or the month. Menus are posted on the main site. You are welcome to eat
lunch with your child any day of the week. Parents can also use the webpage
to purchase lunch for your child. If you access the cafeteria through this
site and know your child's identification number, you can prepay online. This
is a new tool that we hope you find helpful.
How much is
breakfast? We
begin serving breakfast at 7:00 each day. The cost is $1.50.
If I have a
transportation change for my child, what procedure do I follow? We would like to limit changes of transportation
during the day for safety reasons. In the event that you must change your
child's afternoon transportation, please contact the front office at 601-853-8103
before 1:30 p.m.
Who do I call to
report issues with my child's bus transportation?
First
Student is the contract provider of bus service for Madison County schools.
We urge you to promptly report any and all concerns or problems to them at
601-859-1633.
Is the school
prepared for emergency situations?
Your
child's safety is very important which is why Madison County schools practice
safety drills. During a fire drill, students learn how to walk out of the
school building quietly and quickly with their teacher. Students return to
class when the fire drill is finished. Mississippi sometimes has tornadoes
(rain storms with strong winds producing funnel clouds). During a tornado
drill, students learn where to go in the building to protect themselves by
kneeling on the floor and covering their heads.
Should
weather ever become serious enough to warrant cancellation or dismissal of
school, that decision would be made by our school superintendent and an
announcement would be published to all news agencies as soon as it becomes
available. Please check your local television station or radio as well as
this website for the latest information.
