• CLASS SYLLABUS

    Course Description

The Physical Education curriculum will concentrate on all areas of physical development. Classes will stress the importance of student participation and sportsmanship while learning and performing various skills - along with encouraging students about nutritional needs.

    Course Overview:

The physical education curriculum of Ridgeland High School has been designed to help students recognize the importance of regular physical activities. Students will be encouraged to select a variety of activities that include fitness, individual and team activities.

    Course Objectives:

To progressively increase student cardiovascular fitness levels by completing specific warm-ups tasks indoors and outside on the track.

To increase student strength by doing specific weight bearing exercises during fitness activities such as push-ups, crunches, bench dips, squats, lunges, medicine ball work, etc.

To refine motor skills in various areas such as throwing, catching, dodging, shooting basketball, hitting softball, using a racquet, etc.

To participate in team sport and individual sport activities playing by the rules in a cooperative manner.

    Materials

T-shirt, gym shorts or sweatpants, and tennis shoes/socks are proper attire for class.  No heels, platforms, boots, and no metal shoes can be worn. Also please do not wear pants with zippers, buttons, no boxers or spandex.  All items worn must be acceptable according to the school dress code.

    Classroom Management Plan

Take good care of equipment and locker room facilities. Be respectful to the instructor, substitute teacher, and other students in the class. Have a positive attitude, exemplify sportsmanship, be on time, and do not use inappropriate language.   Any student who breaks the rules established in the Student Handbook throughout the semester will be subjected to disciplinary action.

    Course Instructor Philosophy:

We are alarmed about the overweight/obesity epidemic and the continuing hypo-kinetic disease (lack of physical activity) that seems to afflict many of our students. We will continue to motivate our students as best we can by continually evaluating and providing encouragement when necessary. We are dedicated to provide meaningful and beneficial activities for our students and are genuinely concerned about their overall health.

    Grading

Grades will be determined by a points system.   Daily Grades count as 40% in the form of participation, homework, and class assignments.  Projects, chapter tests, and sports performance count as 40%.  Nine-week exam counts as 20%.

Participation - If a student does not dress-out, they are required to WALK around the entire block.

ANY MEDICAL PROBLEMS (ASTHMA, DIABETES, HEART PROBLEMS, OR ANY MEDICAL CONDITION) MUST BE REPORTED TO THE INSTRUCTOR!
