The Assessment and Accountability team is responsible for coordinating and implementing abstinence education. HB 999 required all school districts to implement Abstinence-Only or Abstinence-Plus education during the 2012-2013 school year so the social, psychological, and health gains from abstaining from sexual activity could be realized by students. HB494 followed by HB 633 extended the program through 2024. However, HB 1390, passed during the 2023 legislative Session, deleted the repealer, i.e., Abstinence-Only education will continue for the indefinite future (without additional legsilation). Per this legislation, 5th and 7th grade students are provided the opportunity to participate (with parent permission) in age-appropriate Abstinence-Only Education. As selected by a committee from across the district and approved by the Madison County School Board, the WAIT curriculum is the primary source used for abstinence education. Topics covered in 5th grade include: building positive friendships, decision-making, responding to peer pressure, whole body health, male and female anatomy, and puberty. Seventh grade students additionally cover developing effective communication and the influences of media and technology (internet safety). Schools will communicate with parents of 5th and 7th graders about when Abstinence-only instruction will occur.
