  • Case 21 TEST on Monday!

Posted by Ashley Smith on 9/26/2019

case 21 question stemsIt's hard to "study" for this kind of test.  It really requires focus in class while we go over questions that are similar to Case 21 questions.  I have, however, given the students a hard copy of question stems with bolded words such as theme, main idea, tone, etc. that the students should already know in order to answer the questions.

  • Regarding absences...

Posted by Ashley Rea on 8/6/2019

I totally understand that students have to be absent sometimes for various reasons.  However, if they miss a test or quiz, I can't allow them to make it up during class time.  If I did, they would miss what we are doing during that time, and the cycle would never end. I've explained to the students that they can come in the morning (I get here at around 7:20), during the break (after 1st and 5th blocks), or during 3rd or 5th block with permission from their 3rd or 5th block teacher (those are my off  blocks).  When someone misses a test or quiz, I always call them back to my desk, they tell me a time when they can come, and I even write them a pass.  if they don't come back to makeup a test or quiz when they say that they will, I'm putting a zero in the grade book until they make it up.  I'll be happy to change the zero to the actual grade if they will just come and make it up when they have a chance.

  • Reading Logs for extra credit!

Posted by Ashley Rea on 8/6/2019

*Studenst will have a chance to earn an extra 100 daily grade each week by turning in a reading log on Fridays.  They must read a minimum of 90 minutes per week (that's about 13 minutes a day).  The reading log will ALWAYS be due on Friday, and they will receive a new reading log each Friday that will be due the following week.  I've explained to the students that reading on a daily basis improves their comprehension soooo much, which in turn improves scores in so many other areas, including their other subjects.  They don't have to fill in the entire chart.  I'm only concerned with the amount of minutes they read for the entire week.  They can read all 90 minutes in one day, 30 minutes for 3 days, etc.  They are allowed to read anything that they enjoy reading (books, magazines, internet articles, etc.), but reading that is already required by a teacher at home doesn't count.  A parent or adult signature will also be required. If they lose the reading log that I give them, they can certainly just record the book, date, minutes, and adult signature on a sheet of notebook paper.  If there's no name on the log, I have no way of knowing who it belongs to.

    Reminders:

    • MUST have adult signature AND student's name
    • MUST have the dates in which you read
    • dates MUST be for the week of that particular log (not before or after)

*I will not accept late reading logs.
